European Public Broadcaster Editors Introduced to SUMMA Platform in Amsterdam
SUMMA was presented to the News Assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Amsterdam on 14 November, bringing news editors and directors from different European public broadcasters together. The meeting was hosted jointly by the EBU and the NPO, the Dutch public broadcaster. Members from all over Europe, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Zwitserland, Germany, the UK, Scandinavia, and more, participated.
Peggy van der Kreeft, from the German world broadcaster Deutsche Welle, informed this journalistic audience about the potential of the SUMMA platform for cross-lingual monitoring of news. The trends of automation in news production, including automated transcription, translation and summarization, and the impact such tools may/will have on the workflow is a topic of discussion at all levels and in all areas of the broadcasting world.
As the time – and the technology – is ripe for implementing such automated processes and as we are approaching the final year of the SUMMA project, next year will hopefully show the integration of the technology at some of the EBU member sites.
